Diss-raised Indigo Johnson wins hammer throw at Yorkshire Athletics Championship in Barnsley

Diss-raised Indigo Johnson has been celebrating a victory at last weekend’s Yorkshire Athletics Championships.

The 26-year-old, who attended Diss High School, came out on top in the hammer throw event to clinch a first gold medal.

And her success was all the more impressive given that she only recently resumed her athletics career after seven years away.

The now Sheffield resident joined Rotherham Athletics Club in August 2024 to work alongside coach Ian Cooley.

And the former Diss and District Athletics Club member set a new personal best of 35.08m to get her hands on the top prize at the Championships in Barnsley.

“I’m so incredibly happy that I have won. After seven years of no training, followed by seven hard months of training twice a week through the long, cold winter, it really was amazing to see my hard work come to fruition,” said Johnson, who finished 4cm ahead of her nearest competitor.

“I now have a gold medal that I can keep forever as a reminder of this moment.”
