Diss Town unable to prevent leading goalscorer Liam Jackson from accepting Wroxham’s offer
Manager Garth Good has admitted that Diss Town were powerless to prevent leading scorer Liam Jackson from leaving the club.
Following a conversation shortly after the conclusion of the 2024/25 season, Good had expected the striker to remain at Brewers Green Lane next term.
However, it was announced last week that Jackson, who scored 20 goals in all competitions last term, had agreed to jump up two divisions to join Isthmian League North Division outfit Wroxham.
And Good has conceded that the Tangerines could not compete with the financial package that was on offer from the Yachtsmen.
He said: “It is a blow. I’ve got a good working relationship with Liam and that’s why he came to Diss in the first place. He was initially determined to stay at Diss and kick on with us, but Wroxham have been able to offer him a lot more money than we can – and we’re not talking about just an extra £10.
“We had a long conversation and he was reluctant to leave. He loved our positive environment, especially because he’d just had a couple of tough years.
“But you can never criticise a player for wanting to improve themselves and earning more money in the process – we’d all do the same thing in our own jobs.
“He’s made the decision that is right for him and his family, and we wish him all the best.”
Without Jackson, Diss’ pre-season sessions will get under way on Monday.
It is an early start, but with the new Thurlow Nunn League First Division North season set to start on July 26, Good felt that he had little choice but to get the players back out on the training pitch.
“It seems early because it is, but with the league starting when it does we didn’t have much choice,” he added. “It’s a bit crazy but we’ll do our best to make sure the lads are in the best shape for the first game.”
Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that Diss will play friendlies against Mulbarton Wanderers (July 11, H), Harleston Town (July 15, H), Heacham (July 19, A) and Thetford Town (July 22, H).
